Letter from the Executive Director, Richard Bautch, Ph. D.
Dear Holy Cross Friends,
“Those who teach justice to many will shine like the stars for all eternity.” With these words from Scripture (Daniel 12:3), Blessed Basil Moreau punctuated his treatise Christian Education, a seminal work from the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Moreau chose these inspiring words from the book of Daniel so as to hold a mirror up to educators in the Holy Cross schools – past, present and future.
In his lifetime, Moreau inspired a group of missionary disciples who went into the towns and villages of post-Revolution France with a simple but in no way easy task: to teach with zeal and in so doing make God known, loved and served. No less today, the mission of Catholic education, in tandem with the other ministries that Holy Cross has embraced, is transforming local communities as it changes the world. Each of us is called to be disciples with hope to bring and to prepare our students for better times.
We hope that in your journey, you always have the words of Moreau to inspire and motivate you. May you be like “the stars for all eternity” as you grow spiritually and make the mission of Holy Cross completely your own. To ensure that you have spiritual support, we have designed the Daily Moreau app, and we are delighted that you are using it. May you read from it daily and be reminded of Moreau’s vision, expressed in the insights that grace the app and are summed up in these words: “Education of the mind will change with the times. Education of the heart, however, is and will remain timeless.”
This app would not have been possible without a talented group of people working under the auspices of the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward’s University. We owe a debt of gratitude to Brother Joel Giallanza, C.S.C., who thoughtfully compiled the daily reflection book Gravitating Toward God, from which each of these daily reflections are based. We are also grateful to the developers of the app, Kim Garza, James Puglisi and AJ Valverde. Their determination and creativity made the concept of the Daily Moreau a reality.
